A Brief History
Legend places coffee's discovery in 9th-century Ethiopia, where a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his flock stayed awake after eating red berries from a certain tree. Word spread to Yemeni Sufi monks, who brewed the first drinkable coffee to aid their night-time prayers.
By the 15th century, coffeehouses — qahveh khaneh — had become the social hubs of the Arab world, places of music, chess, and debate. European traders brought the beans home in the 17th century, and coffeehouses bloomed from London to Vienna, seeding the Enlightenment along the way.
Today an estimated 2.25 billion cups are consumed every day, making coffee one of humanity's most enduring shared rituals.
